Hi, I wonder if anyone can help me. I purchased a ROG Strix G513RS Laptop back in January this year. At the time, I didn't consider the use of external displays. Then a couple of months ago, I visited my brother-in-law's home. Trying to show him what collections of movies I had ripped from my collection of Blu-ray discs, I connected my ASUS to his monitor. And from then on, I was hooked.
The problem is that I have found out that my ASUS only has a HDMI 2.0 port. His monitor has both DP and HDMI ports. However, the display has 60 FPS max. The laptop has RTX 3080 and the laptop screen is 165 Hz multisync. I am considering to get myself a 32" 2K or 4K max monitor. I have since learned that in order to have more than 60 FPS, I need a DP to DP connection. My question is if it is possible to connect my laptop via its HDMI 2.0 port to the DP of the (type of) monitors to get the FPS higher than 60? Many thanks for your help in advance. Many many thanks.

yes, it's possible if it's a good quality cable. HDMI 2.0 supports 120hz on 4k, so theoretically it should go higher than 60hz if the cable is good.

Thank you for such a quick response. Another noob question. How will I be sure that the cable I am going to purchase will be a good quality cable? The 1st thing I can think of is the price. Higher the better?

not always higher the better. the branding could be the best way. if it's you've heard of and know, it's likely to be good (or better than no name branded). the next is to google the brand & type of cable you're gonna buy and see if anyone had any issues with it.

if all is well, it's (probably) a good cable.

also there are other self explanatory things, like if it looks cheaply made, too cheap to be true, etc. etc...
