I have a 4-5 year old HP laptop that I installed Proxmox server software on. I now want to install an O/S on it again, but am unable to boot from a live USB thumb drive.

BIOS vendor: Insyde, revision: F.02

To boot to the USB that the Proxmox installer was on I had to change “secure boot” in BIOS to disabled.
I have tried enabling it again, disabling it, nothing helps.
I read that CSM setting can cause conflicts, but this BIOS does not have any settings to do with CSM.

Another strange twist, after selecting the live USB from boot menu, and failing to boot, the USB drive disappears from the boot options, and when attaching it to a different Windows machine, it is not recognized.
I can attach it to a MacBook and format it.

At present, the laptop is a brick.

Any ideas what I can do to salvage this laptop?

Thanks for any help.

Don’t know if there is a better forum to post this question?

Sounds like the usb you were using was faulty and or dying with a lot of bad sectors attempting to boot it in the laptop scrambled more info then decoding and bricked the usb... if it is working in Mac books it could also be locked to apfs format now which means it will forever only work in a Mac now. Your best option to start would be to try a brand new clean usb drive on a know good pc to create any boot os you want then boot in the laptop

Have used different USB drives, with the same result unfortunately.
I can format the thumb drives to FAT on the Mac, and then can mount another live iso on the thumb drive again on a Windows machine, so it appears that the drive itself is OK

What os are you trying to install? I'm confused because you said you running one and trying to replace it. Replace it with what?

Sorry, what I installed was Proxmox server software, so not an O/S. (I have posted on Proxmox forum also, but no action there). When it boots, it only comes to a command prompt where you can log in.

Laptop had Windows on it before I installed this server software. Now I would like to install a Linux distro on it. I have used an ISO image for G-Parted, and one for Debian, using Rufus to create the bootable USB, and checking the DD option when creating the drive.

Rufus isn't the best for Ubuntu iso, I'd use unetbootin for Ubuntu iso's

Are you trying to "install" or run a live distro, they can require two different things and live distro runs slowly off the usb for the most part and uses the system as storage. Installing require a long forgone process that depends on the system setup and iso your wanting to i nstall
Using a "live" iso to boot from, and then install from. Something I have done in the past, let it boot up, and choose install.

The Proxmox interface is like a terminal, minimal information, but you can type in "reboot", "shutdown", etc.
Other than getting into the BIOS, all other information has been displayed through this Proxmox interface, nothing else happens. When I try to boot off the USB drive, the output immediately states "something went seriously wrong".
Again, this message is displayed as though it is coming through the Proxmox interface, and when I say immediate, it is a split second after choosing the USB as the boot option.

Just bizarre to me, like Proxmox has taken control of everything, like nothing is getting beyond it.

Got some help from the Proxmox forum.

It appears that there is some hardware issue. I cannot boot from a USB live image, even with removing the NMVe drive, so nothing to do with Proxmox!
Unfortunately it appears I now own an HP brick since I have no way to install an O/S 🙁

This is the message I get:

Yes this can be done however this is the long way and hardest way to install Ubuntu, if your just wanting your bios was delet
