Laptop won't boot up after changing hard drive

I put my old hard drive in a laptop that my dad gave me, but the laptop won't boot. I think the laptop was running windows 7 or vista and my hard drive has windows 8 OS

Yeah you cant do that. Your mobo talks to your hard drive that was installed with that system.
essentially you gotta wipe that drive and reinstall fresh.
