Laptop Wont Connect To Desktop With VGA or HMDI

Hello, I'm trying to Connect my HP EliteBook 8530w, to my Desktop Monitor but I've encountered a problem... When I plug my HDMI Cable into the Hmdi Input on the Laptop and into the Desktop Monitor, the screen goes black. The same goes with my VGA Cable, I plug it into the Laptop Dock Station that's connected to the Laptop, but it just goes black... Does anyone know a solution? I appreciate it!

Input on the laptop? I think they're outputs for an external monitor, and not an input.
