Laptop won't read USB flash suddenly (needs to format)

Ok, so I have a laptop which I inherited from a family member and it has been working great so far. However, recently, for no apparent reason, it said it needed to run a disk check (Windows 10), even though I barely use it and only use it to make presentations for work and a little bit of internet use.

When it forced me into doing the disk check, it seemed to find some errors and even though it finished and was able to boot back into windows properly, it didn't actually hit 100%. Since then, multiple things have been acting weird. First of all is USB.

Now, every time I plug in a USB flash drive, it says the drive needs to be formatted before able to use. I know the drives are not faulty because I plug them into my desktop and they work just fine. I have tried running a system file check (can't complete because of error), check disk again (seems to finish ok), and reinstalling USB universal bus drivers again, but no success. I also opened disk management and saw that it shows the USB flash, but it doesn't recognize the name I titled it, and the data is listed as RAW, but when I plug it into my desktop, it reads as NTFS or FAT32 as it should.

Some other info that may help, in addition to the USB problems, I've also noticed that Windows is slower after the check disk, and some apps like Chrome crash on trying to open. It also says "Scanning and repairing hard drive 100%" every time I boot it, which it didn't do before.

Should i just reset the PC?? Any advice welcome.

Solution
Hello Lv 88 Mog, a good idea would be to run the HDD's manufactures recommended testing software to check on the drives health. If you have a Seagate, use Seatools. This will let you know if the HDD is the cause of the problem. Best of luck.
I had that thought too. That's a pretty easy fix, though right? I have barely any data on the PC because my desktop is my main computer and I just use this for when I travel - all my data is mostly cloud based or already backed up on both my desktop and a backup external HDD. So I can just buy a new HDD, and clean install Windows 10 from a flash drive, right?
