Laptops and monitors

Hello,
Have to use an external monitor with a HP pavillion laptop due to cracked and unusable screen on laptop - we cannot change any settings etc as we cannot see anything on the laptop screen. The monitor screen is blank. Sometimes it will work if we hit f5, sometimes not. What is the process to consistently have the monitor work with the laptop? Thank you

The next time you get it to work, i.e. fn+f5, go into the display properties and set the monitor as your primary monitor. You can also buy a new screen for the laptop and install it, as it is a pretty easy fix.

Thanks so much, our main problem is that the dumb thing is brand new, doesn't look like replacement parts are available yet. I do not understand why fn+f5 does not consistently give us the results we need - and today not at all but will keep trying and keep checking for a replacement part. Thanks again!

How did the crack occur? Perhaps you could get in touch with HP and see what they have to say in regard to fixing it for free or how much it would cost to replace the screen.

What's the model of the laptop? I'll take a look around and see what i can find.

HP Pavilion dv6z Entertainment PC product # VZ687AV - I think that is what you need - darn thing is brand new but appreciate the effort.
