So I turn my PC on this morning I come back after getting some OJ and to my surprise programs are being closed to do lack of memory. Now I was shocked cause I have 8GB of ram which shouldn't have even been close to being used at boot , I look in task manager and find 85%+ use ages so I jump in MSCONFIG drop some start up programs check device manger and see that it shows all 8GB and then run a Memcheck. Memcheck comes back clean and now I'm only using 25% of my ram on start up. This just doesn't seem right how can I be using 2GB or more just running windows nothing else , iv run mem check , malwarebytes , windows security scan , swapped out the ram and I'm still using 2gb maybe , maybe I'm wrong but this just doesn't seem right. I wanted to get some input from the community.

System-

Without knowing exactly what applications you have running, it is impossible for us to say whether 2 GB usage is right or not.

Also, do NOT defrag a SSD, ever, it does nothing but use up write cycles.

When I installed my new rig I noticed a huge amount of ram usage (2.5GB used on a fresh install with drivers and hardware related software only). It turned out that Virtu was eating up memory for the onboard GPU, and that was why the use was so high. After using virtu once and finding that it really wasnt that great, i uninstalled it, got my ram back, and have never looked back.

If you read what I wrote I said that nothing else is running although this is not TOTALLY true there is no anti-virus running at start up * I uninstalled them completely to be sure * I literary have splashtop and AIM messenger running and the most basic of windows services and im at 2.20GB at start up , I'm using Windows 7 64Bit. To give you some idea SVCHOST.EXE is currently the only processes over 100,000k, When I add up my top 15 processes I can't even get past maybe .8 GB and whats left is like 1,000k per a had full of applications.

Okay so Im 100% sure there is SOME issue now I went through and added up EVERY single running processes used memory and only came up with 1.656GB of used Mem even if you add in the systems quoted 706 TOTAL MB used for Kernal mem * this is a paged PLUS unpaged number. adding this you only get roughly 2.4 GB but the system says its using 3.4 that is one hole missing GB.

By default taks manager shows the values for working set.... the total used is based on the commit size value. The 1GB difference is the amount that is reserved by your application but that can be released if necessary for other applications if necessary. Do a view select columns if you want to see the different counters and values for memory usage

lafontma's suggestion is a good one.
You can configure Task Manger to show the same type of expanded RAM usage data (but without the chart).

Try downloading CCleaner, i use it all the time...fast easy way to stop programs opening on PC startup and therefor use less memory. Other than that run virus scanner, maybe try looking at bios and whether it's set to use the right sort of ram that you have 1066, 1333, or 1600 etc

Ya i mean part of this is what im saying iv ran through every thing I can think of ran malwarebytes cclean is run daily i even ran a batch file to run through the processes and add up all the mem usages of it seems like there is about 1 missing GB of memory that passes memory check and isnt being used bye a virus or maleware *at least according to all the scans I can run*. My best guess is that some where there is a error causing a memory leak. I wanna thank every one who has commented so far its all ways nice to see a outflow of help from the community.
