Large SSD or Small SSD and HDD?

This may have been asked before, but still going to ask. I'm building my first gaming computer, and I was wondering which would be better. My cousin said if I'm not worried about running out of storage, go for 500gb Samsung EVO 850. If I was, he said do 128gb Samsung EVO Pro and 1tb hard drive. So what would actually be the better idea? While I'm at it, any specific hard drive I want? And a bit more off topic, any good monitor for around $100?

Solution

500GB SSD
or
128GB SSD + 1TB HDD

Neither of those.

250GB SSD + xTB HDD
Todays prices make a 128GB SSD a bad choice. The 250GB drives are a much better price point. Add a HDD of whatever size fits in the budget.

A single 500GB? Well...maybe, if ALL your stuff fits in 500GB. I know...
Depends on what you plan to store on your SSD. if it's just the OS and a couple large games, then 128GB will be just enough.
If you want to have a lot more large size games as well as your OS, you could go with a 256GB or higher.
Any HDD drive that is at least 7200RPM and 64MB will be fine.
Each person will have their own usage on storage space.

I went all SSD in my current rig. Of course not everyone has the $$ for a couple of terabyte sized SSDs. My last build went SSD + Hard drive, it worked fine. it's up to you, in my case i wanted the power, space and noise savings that come with all SSD.

But if you don't mind the noise of a hard drive then there really isn't much reason to go with all SSDs, unless you really are a hard core gamer and want everything to load in moments. (i gotta admit that benefit is pretty cool too)

I always recommend having at least TWO drives on your system. That way you can easily create image backups of your SSD as well as saving all your media files onto the second drive... so if your O/S drive fails or crashes... you won't lose any of your data. If you went with a single drive system.. you won't have a place to keep/save/backup any of your data...

And you really need a second drive, if for nothing else...backups.

Well, it looks like I will probably go with the 250gb SSD and an HDD. Any good HDDs you guys would recommend? Should I reconsider my SSD choice, or will the EVO Pro be fine?

SSD - 850 EVO. The Pro not really needed
HDD - WD Black, in whatever size your budget allow, and your use requires.

It looks pretty good, but is there maybe another 1tb around $50 that will do me well? I don't want my pc to go over $800, and I've already pushed that. Looking for a few cutbacks.

A WD Blue then.
