Hello peeps I'm hoping you can help me out as I'm anxiously trying to decide between the two.
I've always been a BIG fan of AMD (former ATI) and it's GPU's. They have literally never failed me, having I changed models whenever I felt like upgrading and not because the card actually died, which didn't happen with Nvidia. I've had 2 Nvidias in the past and both died (could be coincidence, I'm not sure).

But overall I'm a big fan of the AMD brand for Graphics Cards and I'm incredibly undecided as RX580 seems like such a GOOD card.

My system (everything is set in stone except the card, this thread will focus purely on the card):

CPU: i5 7600 (3.5 up to 4.1gHz)
RAM: 8 GB DDR4 2400mHz
SSD: OCZ 240 GB Toshiba
HDD: 1 TB Toshiba
Motherboard: ASUS STRIX 250G GAMING

Should I opt for the RX580? Is it a GREAT card and better (even if slightly) then the GTX1060 6GB?

On a side note I'm currently playing on a laptop from 2011 which has the ATI 5650 1GB and it still runs a lot of stuff gamewise and it has literally never died or had any issues. It also doesn't warm up much at all even in hot days, contrary to the CPU (i5 460M). It has been serving me so damn well, we're talking about a laptop card with 6 years of intensive gaming on top of it.

The RX 580 is extremely overpriced atm, and not quite as good as the 1060 6GB. It's a tiny bit behind in performance, and not as well optimized, but generally holds its own, somewhere in between the 1060 3GB and the 1060 6GB, towards the higher end.
The 1060 6GB also has more VRAM than the 4GB 580 model, to which it is similarly priced atm.

Id go 580 8gb over a 1060 6gb

The issue is prices at the moment , the 1060 is badly overpriced, the 580 is stupendously overpriced .

Never ever been a worse time to buy a gpu to my recollection.

On another note (& I know you said 'set in stone') but a ryzen would be far far better than a locked i5.

It is all about the resolution of the screen you are going to use, you don't mention that part.If you can spent a few more go for a 1070. It will compliment your other hardware much better and you can find good deals if you are patient . I got mine at 400 euro .
As for the laptop i assume you are running at low resolutions, so that is why so many games are still playable.

I am just looking in amazon.de at a 1070 zotac at 459 euro. You can also find open box with 10% off sometimes from there as well. As i said , you need to be patient. Yesterday i got a 1080 ti at 730 euro new ,from there.100 euro less than everywhere else in europe i checked.

Its super strange cause in the store I will be buying at here in Portugal the rx580 8 GB is actually 15 euros cheaper then the GTX 1060 OC dual 6gb, both from ASUS brand

What model is the 580 exactly ?? If its comparable cooler & quality wise then for 15 euro less for me its a no brainer personally.

I consider the 580 to be superior in every respect.

BTW I have a 2011 dell n5010 laptop with a 460m & a 5650 2gb ,as you said still plays games at lower settings & has never had a single issue - My wife has been through 2 acer laptops in the same period which both died prematurely with no display issues.
Just dropped an ssd in mine a couple of months back & it is still a blazing fast little laptop now again.
