Latency with USB Mic and Windows 10

I am using an AT2020USB mic for gaming. The headphones I wear cancel outside noise...like really well. To the point where I can't hear my own voice.

There is like a half second delay between what I say and when I can hear it so it starts throwing me off whenever I'm talking as there is a disconnect between knowing what I am saying and hearing what I am saying often leading me to stutter or slow down my speech.

Is this a consequence of using a USB port instead of the Line In or perhaps its because the mic and headphones are separate?

You may be "listening to your mic".

Open Control Panel > Sound

Under the recording tab, select your microphone and then Properties.

From there, under the Listen tab, there is a checkbox for List To This Device.

If that is selected, you will hear playback of everything your mic is picking up. And what you hear is going to have that slight delay, which you describe is throwing you off.

I do have that option selected since it's the only way to hear that playback, AFAIK.
So I would get this delay no matter what I have it plugged into? I'd rather not have to set up a mixer and plug everything in there

So you don't hear any audio unless the playback loop is selected?

Why is it a necessity to playback your mic to yourself?

Correct

Well I would like to be able to hear what I'm saying. I purchased some good quality headphones that are noise cancelling and I can't hear my own voice when i speak
