On my HP Probook 6550a Laptop, the August 31, 2016 Cumulative Update (KB3176938) would fail on restart with a BSOD error 0xc000021a Critical Process Stop fault. Searched high and low for a solution. Had an image of the Hard Drive and could restore to before the forced update, but it was just a matter of time before Win10 would reinstall the update and kill the computer.
Today I reloaded my Image and let the update happen and since it is the second Tuesday of the Month. Microsoft has a new Cumulative update (KB3189866) and my update went smoothly this time.
Looks like Microsoft fixed whatever issue there was with KB3176938 with the new cumulative update. The big difference I noticed was the earlier update did not show the "do not shutoff updating 0 to 30%" screen before rebooting. While it showed "Do not shutoff...", it never showed the percentage updating to 30%.
I hope this post help someone else out there which was having similar or the same problems. I usually can google my way out of problems like this, but this one was elusive and very tough.
