I had a really nice game, manage to survive with big errors (like
overenchanting a SDSM, letting a ki-rin mount getting untame and blowing
my BoH in the middle of Gehennom).

Grab the Amulet, start going up, managed to deal with double trouble in
Asmodeus's (a real pain since it's no teleport and non-diggable wall force
a long way...)
[They stole both the Amulet and the Orb of fate, a summonning storm
somehow stole both my +6 Mojo and +2 silver saber, I end up chasing
Rodneys up to Juiblex with pickaxe, going down to retrieve my weapons
(don't know where I found again Mojo) and then back up to kill Rodneys and
grab back what is mine...]

Rest of the ascencion run was easy. Until I arrive at fire.

Something engulf me just when I step there (not exactly, i had time to use
the orb to find the portal) and, after being killed, released my in lava.

There, I start sinking in, could not move out of it on my own, the put my
ring of levitation with no effect and finally got killed sunk in lava with
more than 300HPs left and a completly ascendable character :-(

What should have I do in order to avoid that horrible death ?

You should have put on the ring of levitation before stepping on the
portal, I wear it all the time on the Planes.

Also, there are ways to get out of the lava, like polymorphing yourself
into something that doesn't breathe and can pass through (a xorn should
work), or freezing the lava with a wand of cold, or better yet, breaking
a wand of cold, and then making a pit with a wand of digging or a
pick-axe. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Right, I was using my ring of conflict when not on air/water. (plus free
action at the other hand)

Wand of cold. OK. Thanks. I was somehow sure that levitation would save
me (this seems logical to me) and get killed before having time to try
something else.

Well, die and learn... :-(
