LCD monitors at other than "native" resolution

I've heard in this newsgroup and elsewhere that LCD monitors only have a
good picture at their Native resolution. Indeed, I verified that myself
when I tried a LCD monitor some months ago.

But today a saw a NEC 19" monitor (model ASLCD9V BK) that seemed to look
just fine at 800x600 resolution (native was 1280x1024).

Are all of the newer LCDs ok at other resolutions, or it is just NEC? Or
have my eyes gotten so bad I can't tell the difference?

Are you sure it wasn't 1600x1200 native, as that would divide perfectly
(a 4 pixel square for every 1 pixel at 800x600)
