I game 90% of the time on a big screen TV.
Coming from consoles I was always more comfortable being a couch/lounge gamer.

Admittedly its a 72inch screen & I sit 8-10 feet away ;-)

OK primarily for gaming imo , for desktop use , internet etc you are far far better with a 23+ inch monitor & a desk /chair , using a TV for productivity use will make your eyeballs scream after a short while ;-)

TVs usually have a slower response time than a monitor.

For RPGs, MMORPGs, slower paced games, or not gaming at all, the TV is probably fine. But for FPS/fast paced games, or for higher refresh rates, the monitor will win without a doubt.

As cool as it sounds to use a huge TV as a PC monitor it actually can get pretty annoying turning your head to follow the cursor.

The other thing is most TVs tend to have a higher response time compared to monitors. So while to some this might not matter, if gaming it's definatley something to research before hand.

if you plan to play game, it's a big different. monitor is clearer, with the tv sitting so close your eyes seem to be fatigue quicker on my experience. I have a monitor and a TV as screens, monitor to play game and TV screen to browser the web and watch videos.

Monitors are designed for viewing a computer generated image (so completley diditaly created with digital pixels) at a couple feet away.
TVs are deisgned to disply a image created on film and display it to someone sitting 8-15 ft away.

Refresh rates and PPI make a huge difference here.

A higher end monitor is going to have better color accuracy as well.

Now if you are talking about 55" monitors over 55" TVs then it is also due to corporate/governement purchases that need displays that DO NOT have all of the "smart" bundled in crap and/or TV tuners; so because there is a market for it, companies can charge more for essentialy less.
