Well I installed DX8.1 beta build 620 and there's great news and not so great news. Firstly the problem. It seems that this version of DX8 has broken the 3Dmark2001 high detail Lobby test with Kyro II boards. It runs but everything is rendered. So walls and pillars are see through (this doesn't occur with low detail Lobby test) and as such at the standard res I now get a worse score then before because obviously a Kyro II rendering everything in a scene is basically a TNT2 Ultra with more efficient bandwidth usage (in performance not features). However thats the only problem, every other test still runs fine. Now for the great news. Rendering into textures has indeed been fixed. The demo now works and works well too and the tests are a whole lot less CPU limited too. I did 2 tests both at 640x480. I used this res so that fillrate was not an issue at all (as fillrate would limit the score at 1024x768 because of the broken high detail Lobby test rendering everything) so we could see the full benefit of fixed rendering into textures:

Broken rendering into textures: 2050

Fixed rendering into textures: 2360

Well there it is, thats a hell of a difference and when the Lobby test has been fixed (which should happen in the final DX8.1 or possibly a new IMGTEC driver) everyones defualt scores will go up by at least 200 points (at the moment defualt 1024x768x32 was actually a little slower then before because of the broken lobby test adversly effecting th score).

One thing I noticed straight away after installing the new DX8 beta was the difference in the high detail car chase. Before installing the new DX8 beta I got no more then 5fps at any res because of the CPU strain that software rendering into textures was causing, lowest 2fps and highest 13fps. Now in the same test I get 12fps, lowest 8fps highest 26fps. So before it was a total slide show and now its still slow but at times its smoothish.

noko:, I'll post those SS benches in the other thread shortley.

hey power, didn't you say you'd never try another beta directx again or was that someone else?

Let me do some of you folks a small favor here. DO NOT install any Microsoft products until they are in full release. Unless you want to submit bugs, and deal with reinstallation of your entire system, leave them alone. Unless you dont mind a potential system crash.

Blah, Blah Blahh, Blahh, blahh blah blahh, blah blah.

yah!!!
I said that ...
but my curiosity is stronger than my conscience...
lol

by the way my 3dmark 2000 scores are lower in windows 2000 only by a small margin (50 points) with directx8.1 beta instead of directx8...
they need to optimize directx8.1 a little more...

So I take it that it didn't fix the DX8 bug with textures with the Kyro2 yet. Microsoft better get in gear.

my 3dmark 2k1 is much better... and the demo now works...
so the rendering into textures issue is ok now ...

but I loose some score in 3dmark 2000 (less few polys with my machine) so it needs to be improved... ;)
it's only a beta ...
;)

Thats is good news then about DX8, 50 points isn't significant dealing with 3dMark2000. Now you can tell us how it plays in games like Giants etc.. What was your new score in 3dMark2001? Also what was your old 3dMark2001 score?

my previous score in windows 2k with 3dmark 2k1 was 1350
now I am getting roughly 1700..
1700/1350= 25 % increase...

I did not test directx8.1 build 620 with win98 the link is dead..
:(

my score with windows 2000/3dmark2k is more or less 4200 so it dropped 50-100 points from previous testings...
windows 98 and directx7 get more than 4500 score...

My MX400 64 meg with an Athlon 800 with 256mb of ram gets 2139 in 3dmark2001 default test at 1024x768x32 and 4444 ( I laughed when I got that score, anyways) in 3dMark2000 default test 1024x768x16. In Serious Sam 1024x768x32 Extreme quality except for anisotropic filtering is turned off and Optimal texture compression is used - 33.5FPS. Quake III at 1024x768x32 max quality 42FPS. With the new nvidia drivers I can't even bench 3dMark2000 in 32 bit color, it just kicks me back to my desktop, the 1220 drivers seemed more stable. Plus Serious Sam is now locking up my machine with these new nvidia Drivers.

Ha haa, finally got 3dMark2000 to work in 1024x768x32 appears PowerStrip is the culprit for instability with the new drivers, anyways I get a score of 3092 in 32 bit mode, I bet the Kyro2 will smoke me there. What do you get in 1024x768x32 on your Kyro2?

Hey Noko how in the heck can I get that beta when I get this message:

You do not have permission to access this page due to your credentials not accepted.. <-- What is that? LOL.

Do you have any other handy links? Or do I need to shut off my firewall just to access the site?

You see, the Kyro2 smokes the MX's in 32bit. Besides the Kyro2 does everything in 32 bit anyways so its 16 bit mode is really a modified 32bit downgraded to 16bit in the frame buffer only. My mx when it goes to 32 bit color has a dramatic slowdown in performance, still usable up to 1024x768x32 on most things. As for 3dMark2001 the Kyro2 wasn't around for them to optimize there code for it. The real test is how well the Kyro2 plays real games on which most games it flys. I was impress with the MX 16 bit mode compared to the Radeon's, the Radeons 16bit mode looks terrible.

Your minimum framrates beat out my MX400 meaning you probably don't see the jerky parts of the test as I do on my MX400. That to me is the most important info, and then the avg FPS the next. The high FPS over 60 are really just meaningless. Also I note that all of your AVG framrates are way above 30FPS, two of mine are actually in the mid 20's. Meaning even though I got a higher mark yours actually is the better benchmark looking at the data. I see slow downs in mine while yours I bet remained smooth. What do you think?

it tells that kyro 2 is more consistent than geforce 2 MX

but these benchmark was optimized for nvidia like most others benchmarks, so it was not fair for kyro 2...
I take this from the readme...
<i>
"Warning: GL-Excess has been developed and tested on nVidia
-------- video cards only. I got word that it runs fine on
ATI video boards too. Many glitches on Matrox cards."</i>

Yes of coarse and most new games are also. Just a fact of life at the moment. Did you see the new info at AnAndTech abou ImgTec Kyro3?
