Leather Goddesses Help

I am playing Leather Goddesses of Phobos an I am stuck on Mars.
Specifically, should it be possible to travel east and west along the canal
in the barge? I think I need to kiss the frog with lip balm but I cannot
get from the dunes back to the frog. Thanks for help in advance.

You can only travel one way along the canal. Mess around with the controls
on the barge, and you should figure it out. The frog is irrelevant at this
point in the game.
