Leaving for college, what state should I leave my pc in.

This weekend I will be leaving for college and will be leaving my gaming rig at home. I may be back periodically but for the most part it will be sitting unused. What is the best way to leave your computer if it will be sitting idle for weeks or even several months at a time? Should I shut it down, put it in sleep mode, or should I simply just leave it running? Thanks.

Shut it down and unplug it from the wall socket, also unplug the monitor from the wall socket.
