LED and LCD monitors

wanted to know if there is a difference between LED and LCD or is it just a marketing gimmick. also which brand is better between Acer and Samsung

It's not LED "or" LCD, they are all LCD monitors. There are LCD monitors that use LED for their backlight, or LCD monitors that use pretty much a regular bulb.

Full LED backlights are good, they have an even brightness across the whole screen, and can produce nice colors.

Samsung is better than Acer, generally.

The only real LED monitors are large format displays usually for outdoor signs like in Times Square.

If you are talking about LED backlight LCD monitors and the regular backlight LCD monitors, not much difference.

If you are talking about the giant LED displays and a regular LCD, there is a huge difference in power use. You could probably power a while house with the amount of power it takes to light an LED display.

Once again, you can't talk about LCD OR LED monitors in the computer world, it's LCD monitors with LED backlights.

The power consumption difference between a 24" LCD monitor with traditional florescent backlight vs a 24" LCD monitor with LED backlight can be significant.

According to the following review of the Dell U2410 (florescent backlight) by CNET, the operational power consumption is about 64w; I am assuming that means right out of the box with no calibration whatsoever. When calibrated power consumption drops to 57w.

The below review of the Dell U2412M (LED backlight) by TFTCentral. With default settings power consumption is about 29w, when calibrated it is 22w.

I will add the caveats that:

#1 - they are not the exact same 24" monitor with different backlights.
#2 - the calibration process is probably a little different between the two review websites.

While the power is cut, the cost savings or even "green" power savings is pretty much negligible. It's not like going from a tube TV or projection TV that draws 300+ watts to an LCD TV that uses 100 or less.

I would not pick a monitor just for the power savings, not enough to worry about.

Overall, Samsung is a better brand.
