Hi experts. I've asked on the official Logitech forum, but I've received a very polite "zog off" answer.
The point is that after many (like, what, seven, nine years? I got this one back in my student days) it's just as described - the LEDs are no longer as bright as they used to be, easy to compare to Caps Lock, because it's never on and its LED grows bright as day one.
It's clearly just the wear of time - they worked above and beyond for years and only started that recently, 2-3 years ago.
I hope it is easy to see that the middle of the keyboard is almost not lit at all, in a pattern that should prove that it's not my greasy hands))

Also the bottom left is also almost dark. The numpad is brighter a bit, and the spot in the bottom right, so bright that the sensor went and just smudged it into whole white, is the never-used Caps Lock. Even if my hands had to do anything with it, I don't touch the Num Lock symbol more than the Caps Lock one)
I did a couple photos more with a little bit illumination from the Reply screen of the Logitech page so that it would be a little bit brighter. Also, made a separate one with the Num Lock and Caps specifically, so that it was easy to see the difference in luminosity.
Here's the only one bright as on day one:

And an overall view:

These are all taken at "maximum brightness" mode.
Actually, I've checked online, and the general life expectanly of a LED is 50 000 hours
http://www.electronicsweekly.com/blogs/led-luminaries/led-life-expectancy-2009-02/ (I specifically looked for one that's older, so that the numbers would be closer to the ones I would get with my Illuminated)
And Google tells me that it's about 2000 days straight.
I never turned off my LED backlight because it's just so gorgeous. In my student days, sometimes I left the PC running overnight (sometimes is an understatement, clearly, those were student days) so it's actually quite possible that they are actually reaching the end of their life.
So what I think is, I can go and get a new Illuminated, but this one is still functioning properly after years and years of work. It would be a total waste. I mean, if it was a car, it would be going 9 years without a single check.
So, how can I change the LEDs? Do the service centers provide that option or maybe I can do that myself? I can order some, plus the warranty is long gone, and I have a soldering iron. However, I'd probably prefer another solution.
