I want to install another SSD in my laptop but the specs confuse me as to what i am supposed to install.

My current drive is SKHynix_HFS512GD9TNI-L2A0B : 512.1 GB

Now this is a 2280 drive and the specs say that in dual ssd mode 2280 drive can be upto 1tb and 2242 drive upto 512Gb.

Does this mean that i have to use a 2242 drive only or can i install another 2280 drive up to 1 tb capacity in the second slot?

The slot does support both 2280/2242.

Get a 2280 1TB should work.

The specs are describing what is available when buying new.
I think you can install any capacity ssd that you wish.
Look at this video to see how it is done:

The easiest capacity upgrade would be to a 2.5" sata ssd. any capacity is ok.
Do not worry about sequential speed, most of your work will be random and a 2.5" sata device will perform comparable to a m.2 device.

The m,2 smaller 2242 slots are not intended for ssd's. A wifi card might go there.
But, a small data ssd is probably ok.
