Legrand Niky UPS shuts down after exactly 60 minutes

I recently bought a Legrand UPS model Niky 600 model (UK/EU voltage). It is rated at 600va and 300W. It has 1 IEC AC input, 4 IEC load outputs, a USB port (for diagnostic and other stuff) and telephone in/out sockets.

Before purchase, I checked APC's UPS selector to see which model I needed to keep a cordless phone (5.5v; 500mA) and a ADSL router (12v; 1A) on during a power cut. According to APC selector, a 500va UPS would give me 202 minutes.

So my thinking was that Legrand's Niky 600va would give me at least that amount of uptime. Instead the UPS is shutting down at exactly 60minutes during a simulated power failure (switch off AC to the ups). UPS was charged for more than 10h before conducting my test. Did it twice and same result. Any thoughts or solutions most welcomed. Thanks.

~ ~ So far I managed to install Legrand's UPS Communicator software to communicate with the UPS via its USB port. All diagnostics run fine. It doesn't report any errors which is what you'd expect from a brand new device. During simulated power failure, the device was making an annoying beep every 3 seconds. I used the software to switch off the UPS buzzer as they call it. So that's good. Also good is that the diagnostics reported that my phone + ADSL only represented a 2% load on the UPS and its inside temperature was a constant 30ºC.

That UPS is rated to give 5 minutes of uptime at 80% load! So shutting down at exactly 60minutes during power cut at 2% load just doesn't make sense to me. In the software configuration options, I disabled everything which has the word "Shutdown System" or "Shutdown UPS" next to it. But this has had no effect during my second powercut test. ~ ~

Hi Wyoming, do you know how much uptime I should practically get from a 600 va UPS, given the load I described in my question? Thanks.

I've got no idea. When I bought mine, the box had printed on it how long to expect it to last under various loads. Do you have the manual? I'll try to look it up on line. I see much shorter times: http://ups.legrand.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/AD-EXLG-UPS-QG15B-GB-UPS.pdf

Personally, if I want to know how long my UPS will last I unplug it and count. It gets worse and worse over time, and then I replace the battery.

I can't tell you how a UPS should work in theory. I only know from practice with the three that I have had, and ten minutes uptime was pretty good. Then again, I run my computer off it.

Ok I see.. but you're confusing full load (or heavy load of a computer) versus my light load. My Macbook Pro gives me hours of battery life during a power-cut so my only problem is to keep the Wifi internet running, which I don't think is unusual. The box/packaging has suggestions for use such as fax, security camera, routers, etc... and obviously a computer.

A cordless phone and a broadband router count as 1 to 2% of the UPS' load. This is why I was expecting to get 2h minimum (even though APC's calculator says I should get 3h on their 500va). What I need to find out is how do I prevent this UPS from switching off after exactly 1 hour of operation. Maybe that UPS has 2 small batteries and 1 is dead or disconnected... :-(

What is the remaining battery capacity and remaining battery runtime after the self-shutdown after 60 minutes?

It could be the deep discharge protection kicking in. Deep discharging of the battery will shorten the battery's life.

That's a good point. I will do another test and launch the Diagnostic software during last 2 minutes of operation. Will report back. Thanks. :)
