Length of 7XXX Series Cards

I searched and don't think anyone can know for sure yet, but hopefully someone has a good guess at this. Does a die shrink for GPUs play any role in the physical length of the card?

The reason I ask is that I wanted to upgrade my 4870 to a more powerful, yet quieter, card, mainly for BF3.

I had settled on an Asus DirectCU 6870 until realizing that at 11 inches, it was way too long for my Antec Sonata III (which barely fits my 9.5" 4870). It seems most 6870s with good (and quiet) cooling options exceed the space I have, and I don't think anything less powerful would be a worthwhile upgrade. I am aware that the 560 Ti would fit both my size and performance requirement, but my budget requires me to look for alternatives before forking over the extra $50 above a 6870.

So basically my question is: is it reasonable to expect a card with the above qualities from the 7XXX series, or should I fork up for a 560 Ti?

In this case, I would say get a 560 Ti, or if you can do SLI, get a pair of GTX460s as they are shorter and two of them will run BF3 much better.

According to Sapphire's site, this HD 6870 is 250mm in length. By my calculations, that's less than 10".

Yeah, I looked at that one too, and I think at 250mm = 9.84 inches it is the slightest bit too big. Tomorrow I'm going to try and relocate an interior fan that sits between my expansion slots and my HDD bay, if I can do that it'll add another inch of room. Still not big enough for the Asus, but that Sapphire will definitely fit (and it's supposed to be one of the quieter ones too).

I had to do that same thing on a previous build. Removed the HDD bays that sat at the bottom of the case, and put a fan-cooled drive bay that took up 2 of the 5 1/4" bays. Then I had gobs of room ;-)
