Hi there,

My daughter just received The Sims 2 for Christmas and all is running
well apart from extremely lengthy delays when saving and/or quitting.

Is this normal? If not, what can be done to speed this aspect up.

Thanks in advance for your help

Yes, it seems normal.

Best regards,

Some had reported that the patch for The Sims 2 has reduced the saving
time... Try the patch which you can download from the official site.

How long? A minute or two is normal when saving, 15 minutes is not.

Also, it does take a long time after quitting, up to 5 minutes (maybe
more), it really depends on how long you play. (Poor programming by
Maxis - apparently a memory leak).

maybe you could tell us how long exactly (more or less) these delays are?

Hi there,

Thanks for the response.

It's about 5 minutes for normal game saving and over 10-15 minutes when
quitting - but that was after a lengthy (>2 hours) playing session.

Our PC is only just over a year old - WIN XP, AMD 1.6 MH, 512K RAM

Thanks again
Henry

What about you videocard? When I got the game it had those same
problems, updating the drivers worked for me.

For starters, bumping up your memory to 1GB wouldn't hurt at all.

Yep, same here. I was taking 10-15 minutes to save even if
just going to a commercial lot or something. Updating the
video drivers solved the problem for me.

Saving time depends on a lot of things I guess:
1. Harddrive fragmentation. Defragment the drive using the built in
defragmenter in WinXP or a third party application.
2. Other processes running in the backround. Maybe you have an
antivirus application running real-time file scan? Maybe you should
consider disabling it temporarily when playing. On own risk, of
course. 🙂 Stop unused WinXP services in Computer
Administration/Services before playing.
3. Naturally, general machine specs: CPU, RAM, harddrive type
(ATA/SATA/SCSII), free space on harddrive. The more of everything, the
merrier, but that's old news now a days.. 🙂
On my 3GB P4 with 2 giga RAM and nice and quick SATA harddrive saving
even most complex lots takes 15-20 secs. max. On my wife's old machine
it takes a couple of minutes. Sorry, didn't mean to brag. 🙂

...and last but not least:
4. Size of the lot and number of objects on it!
As an example: I have a temp lot with just a wall with a telephone
hanging on it. Nothing else. I use it for introducing new sims to the
neibourghood. Saving this lot takes half a second!
