Hello, I've searched high and low and even tried to make an account on lenovo forums to which i get blocked by somehow misspelling the code even though I tried all forms of case sensitive and tying the words together or not.

I currently have a Lenovo g510 serial CB26717713 MT:80A8000 motherboard type 20238, if it helps with anything, and I'm trying to upgrade the cpu from it's current i3-4000M to a i5-4200M (low budget and i don't really need the i7, just need to do my office stuff and run LoL decently on it).
The best answer I would receive would be "look in the hardware maintenance manual and fidn the supported list" but here's the issue: In that same list not even my current cpu is listed let alone the i5, which leads me to believe that they do not list parts that are discontinued.

Could I put a i5-4200M on this even though I have no part serial to go on?!

Laptops aren't exactly upgradable. A better and easier option would be to build a external graphics dock for you laptop to power your gaming needs. (that i3 of yours if more than enough for lol)

The thing is that i need to change the cpu for my work needs. The amd discrete one does just fine on lol. Yes i am aware that laptops aren't meant to be upgraded but i don't have the money to spend on a new performant one and the cpu i get will be used so it's much cheaper.

Your going to have to go to a laptop repair shop and see if they can replace the processor. Another thing you should know is, an SSD would make your laptop alot faster for work needs rather than a processor. I would suggest you see if your laptop has space for an extra 2.5" drive for the SSD or you would have to swap out the HDD for the SSD.

Already did that but thanks for the thought.

Edit: my post stopped at "thought" due to internet.
I used brackets to slip in the SSD instead of the ODD. I wirk as a IT Tech but since i got no results on searching around i decided to try and ask people around here who might have had experience with this particular problem. I've ordered a second hand 4200m that has the technical serial in which the g510 was made but it's still in the air. Will post results in a few days.
