Hi all

I'm trying to upgrade Windows 10 but it fails after attempted Initiazing to 22H2. No further Updates are permitted. This is an old Laptop and there are no further BIOS upgrades available after 2014. Frankly I'm surprised Windows 10 has installed already but I'd like to get further Windows Updates at least for the next year or so.

I am thinking of utilising Rufus to install a more up to date Windows 10 22H2 ISO that I've downloaded and wonder if this would work?

If so I want to "upgrade" or "Reinstall" the ISO over the existing OS so as not to lose files or reinstall programs. Again if this is possible, could someone please advise the best version of Rufus to use and exactly how to go about this without wiping the Laptop.

Thanks

Is there a specific error message or error messages regarding the reasons for failure?

Look in Update History, Reliability History/Monitor, and Event Viewer for specific error messages.

The objective being to discover why the initialization is failing.

There could be reasons that even Rufus would fail. Plus add even more risk of losing files and programs.

[Everything is backed up to drives other than on the laptop - correct? Plus those backups are proven recoverable and readable - correct?]

Compare the laptop's specs to the installation requirements for Windows 10 22H2.

Thanks for your response. The update fails because Windows Update states "A current driver on your PC may be better than the driver we're trying to install. We'll keep trying to install". It is a well documented error but having spent 3 solid days wading through all the ssuggestions, trying them and avoiding all the rubbish out there, nothing works. The Laptop is an old one and fails Windows 11 due to processor and TPM so thought upgrading the OS might sort.

How do I install the upgrade without clean wiping, using Rufus please?

download the ISO and make an installer on USB
With the PC you want to update running, put USB into a slot
open file exploder (win +e key)
navigate to the USB and run setup.exe
this will offer to upgrade the PC.
Agree to wizard.
PC will restart and install 22H2

this will keep any installed programs... its the same as running windows update except you have all the files it needs on the USB.

Nice one thank you! I'll give it a whirl later. The Laptop is my son's Father-in-Law's and has already given me the go ahead to do a clean install if the above doesn't work - my guess is that like Windows 11, it doesn't support 22H2 either. So perhaps the ISO will bomb at some point but it'll be interesting to find out :) Thanks again for your advices, much appreciated - I'll update upon completion or otherwise

@Colif Ok, so I went through the instructions - only initial thing was it did not give me a choice as to whether to Upgrade or not. But no worries once it started it seemed it was doing an Upgrade. At the end I thought all was good but then on another automatic restart I got this message: - "Undoing changes made to your computer" - a white message on a full black screen. After about 10 minutes I then got a Windows 10 Setup message saying: -

"We couldn't install Windows 10 - We've set your PC back to the way it was right before you started installing Windows 10. 0x8007001F - 0x20006 The installation failed in the SAFE-OS phase with an error during REPLICATE_OC operation"

This then got me back to where I was before I started and again after trying, I still get the Winows Update error detailed in Post #3

This website details the issue and gives 5 ways to resolve, all of which I've tried before without success: -

So I think the issue is down to the fact that on this Lenovo G710, Windows has gone as far as it can without upgrading the Hardware which would not be economical. So I'll stick where I am unless anyone has other thoughts and can think of a way to resolve my issue. Thanks for your's and @Ralston18 's input, just glad that my Image put me back to where I was. 👍

I would do this then

then upgrade to 11 if laptop can run it.

Thanks @Colif - please read post #3 - the Laptop does not support Windows 11 and my gut feeling is that it doesn't support the 22H2 version of Windows 10 either. There's a webpage in Lenovo's Support website to check for 22H2 Support but for the life of me I can't find out one way or the other. If I thought it did then I would try your suggestion otherwise I'm sticking where I am. This is an old Laptop circa 2013 - it came with Windows 8 then updated to Windows 8.1, then finally Windows 10. It's gone as far as it can IMHO

Hi @rozel . I'm interested to know did you finally succeed to install Windows 10 22H2 on your Lenovo G710 laptop. I'm asking because I also have Lenovo G710 laptop and soon plan to install Windows 10 22H2 (my current Windows version is Version 1809 (October 2018 Update) ). My laptop is produced in 2013 and bought in 2014. Specifications are:
CPU: Intel Core i7-4702MQ
GPU: Nvidia GeForce GT 720M 2GB
RAM: 8GB DDR3 1600MHz
HDD: 1TB
My Laptop Machine Type Model is : 80AH000.
I'd like to know does your laptop is the same Machine Type Model?
My BIOS version is 8ECN24WW, 26-Sep-13. There is Update for BIOS on Lenovo website (8ECN95WW - 26 Nov 2014), but i haven't updated.
Can you please tell me what BIOS version you have, to find out if this has any connection with failure to install Windows 10 22H2.
If I succeed to install windows 10 22H2 I will let you know.
Best regards
