Hello, I've got a Lenovo ThinkPad L490 Laptop and last time I used it, it was working just fine. I turned it off and didn't use it for about a week.

I tried turning it on today but it won't power on even though the power-button's LED light and the light on the back of the screen stay on, the screen is all black and I've noticed the fan is not spinning up either.
While the power button light stays on, the caps lock key lights up just for about a second, then goes off and it just stays like that. If I try holding the power button to force shut it down, it goes off for a second and immediately comes back on.

I read there should be some reset pinhole on the bottom or the sides but I don't see one ?

Things I've tried:
  • Took off the back cover and disconnected the battery, then held the power button for 20-30 seconds.
  • Reseated the RAM stick on both slots (it's just one stick).
  • Unplugged the CMOS battery and left it like that for about 10 minutes.
  • Unplugged the keyboard in case it was causing some issues but still nothing.

What's weird is that after the last try where I tried unplugging the keyboard, pressing the power button while the charger is unplugged it no longer keeps the light on, it only stays on when the charger is plugged in, I think I may have messed it up even more now.

At this point is there anything else one could try or should I send it to a technician?

It might be that your adapter might be at fault or the power delivery area of your laptop's motherboard might be compromised. If it's an adapter issue, it can be solved by a donor adapter. If it's a short on the motherboard, you're going to need a multimeter to identify it and subsequently soldering irons and replacement power delivery componentry.

You've already tried discharging the laptop but I'd have tried one additional step. After disconnecting the battery, press and hold down the power button for 30secs to discharge the laptop's residual power, remove the stick of ram, then use an eraser to wipe the gold contacts, make sure there are no eraser lint leftover on the stick of ram and then reseat the stick of ram. Then power up with the adapter, not the battery.

As for your keyboard, you might want to see if it's seated properly in it's jacket/sleeve/connector.

Thanks for the replies. I tried wiping the gold contacts as instructed and also plugged in the charger while the battery is disconnected but it still does not power on. The lights just go on as if it is charging but no sign of life when I press the button. Also left it to charge for a good few hours then tried turning on with just the battery but same result.
