I want to upgrade my Lenovo t61 to Windows 8. However, the laptop at the moment is running Windows 7 on 1GB of ram, and with an intel core duo processor (1.8MHZ)

So what would I need to get the computer up to snuff to run Windows 8?

How would I have know it would cost 100+ before you JUST told me?? Well, now I just wonder if it will be cheap to repair.

Old thinkpads are extremely good laptops. They have better keyboards than anything manufactured today. If yours is working well and you do not need to run specialized windows apps, you should save any personal data on a thumbdrive and then install Linux as your operating system. Personally, I favor Fedora 20 which I use exclusively on my Thinkpad T61.

I'm running Windows 8.1 on my Lenovo T61 15.4" screen, model 64574UU. The Duo Core cpu is running at 2.0Ghz, with 2Ghz of ram. My hard drive is a WD 1.0TB @5400rpm. I've got most of the drivers for it from the Lenovo Support site, however, I am stumped on getting the multi smart card reader (on left side of laptop) drivers for it. I also need Bluetooth and most of the Fn hot keys drivers, as well. For the most part, this system is pretty quick and applications load smoothly. I'm running Autocad on it, and the rendering is unbelievably fast. I spent $30.00 for a replacement screen, $60.00 for the hard drive, and $10.00 bucks for a DVD-RW drive for it. And I paid $50 bucks for it 3 years ago. I replaced the fan 2 years ago, and I noticed that the motherboard is literally surrounded with an aluminum roll-cage, making this a pretty tough machine. The only downfall that I have right now is I'm looking for a 9-cell lithium ion battery to replace the one I have now, 'cause it's totally dead without it being plugged in. 'Next month's item to buy. Lastly, I'm planning on upgrading the ram to 4gigs, and buying another hard drive with a caddy to slide into the DVD bay as a secondary drive.
Bottom line, if you have a couple hundred bucks to invest in this one, like the man above said, it will do great for word processing, watching movies, ect. The only pi$$er is finding all the required drivers for the devices on the laptop, ie., fingerprint reader, multi smart card reader, network controllers, sd card reader, ethernet and modem, and some keyboard hot key devices like the Bluetooth switch (F5), etc. I spent a couple weeks gathering all the drivers that would work with 8.1, and I'm about the burn them all to a disc just in case I've got to do a clean install, someday. Have fun with this.
PS: After all the bs I went through getting this pc to work with Windows 8, I probably would have been better off just installing Windows 7 on it. Lenovo supports all the Windows 7 devices on the T61, most of which are already on the CD, however, as aforementioned, if you want 8.1 on your pc, then you're going to have to hunt for some of those drivers on your own, because Lenovo won't have all of them.
