Lenovo X130e switching off randomly

My Lenovo X130e switches off when the battery is inserted even though it's fully charged. I'm forced to take the battery out as it won't switch on even though it's plugged into the charger. When I take out the battery and use the charger only, it works fine. Do Lenovo batteries have short circuit protection? Would buying a new battery solve the problem?

Since the laptop does work fine with just the AC adapter connected that could only mean that the problem is the battery itself. Yes laptop batteries has short circuit protection but they are still prone to wear and tear.
