Question Less or more ram for performance.

Hi,

I currently have x1 8GB of ram at 2400hz. I have just ordered x2 16gb at 3200Mhz.

My question is, I know if I was to mix these two to give 40GB of Ram, it would operate at 2400Mhz.

What would be better for performance, just using the new x2 16GB ones, or combining old with new to give 40GB but a lower clock speed. Is it a noticeable thing between the Mhz?

Thanks

:)

They may or may not work together, it depends on many factors especially what motherboard and CPU you are using.

As far as performance, that too depends on whether your programs need more memory than memory speed (unlikely after you have 32GB of 3200MHz dual channel memory).

Definitely 2x16GB for 32GB. That other stick will just be in the way. Chances are good that you might not get a working config out of them even at 2400Mhz.

Only exception might be if you KNOW you are going to use more than 32GB.
Ah that makes sense. Not really, I just found some games are getting quite slow with just 8 now so thought time for an upgrade. Just wasn't sure what to do with my old stick!

In actuality you only need around 2x8 (16gb) of RAM for most games nowadays. With Windows 11, we will see if we actually need more. your 2x16gb of RAM is more than enough. Don't even try to struggle with the older 8gb chip. If you want to use it you might have to end up setting all RAM speeds to 2400mhz and why would you do that if you have 32gb that can run at 3200mhz.

TLDR; Just use the 2x16GB @ 3200mhz. It's MORE than enough :)
