hey guys i'm building a new office computer, due to budget i was wondering if i should take 4gb with a 128gb ssd +1tb hdd, or 8gb of ram with only an hdd? and could you please explain why.

thanks!

8GB RAM and SSD could make way more difference in the performance of applications & windows in general than anything.

If you are into gaming, 8GB would be a very good idea. And if you install the windows and all the everyday used programs into the SSD, windows will boot faster, programs and games will load quicker. + response times would be reduced due to the data transfer rate of SSD is higher than HDD.

The problem is, you are asking a question that is comparing apples to oranges. You need at least 8 gig of memory with a modern PC, or you will be sorry. Especially an office PC where you are likely to have several programs or apps open all at once. Now, as far as the drive goes, an SSD wont really do a whole lot for an office PC, but it would add a lot of snap opening and closing programs, but don't skimp on RAM to get an SSD.

I completely disagree with some of the answers here, we used to have 4 gig machines and they were so painfully slow, if you actually use Microsoft Office for more than just a word processor. 8 gig made a huge, huge difference. I routinely have more than 10 spread sheets open, File Maker Pro, a couple of other apps, and a least a couple of browser windows open all at once as I am working through out the day. Add any type of design program to the mix, even something as simple as Acrobat or Photoshop LE, and that 8 gig is gone.

OP, you are not getting much help over here. :)

But I know one thing, a SSD is not meant to COMPENSATE for lack or ram. The SSD is not meant to be 24x7 SWAP-ing boy. To that end, get as much Ram as you need (and I don't know what that number is) THEN think about getting a SSD for smoother overall computer response.

This one I agree with 100%. This is a very accurate assessment for an office PC.

I agree with jsmithepa on that. 8GB of RAM will serve better for an office PC. SSD can also help but if you have a limited budget, get the RAM now and later on when you have more to spent, spent it on an SSD.

In any office environment, you will need to do multitasking at time to time. But when it is needed, it better give results fast.

In this regards, RAM is more of a game changer.
