Question Letters and symbols not working on any keyboard.

Hi. My computer stops in the middle of booting if I have anything plugged into the USB ports. It works fine if I unplug everything and plug them back in after booting. But once I do that, I'm unable to enter my password, because my computer won't let me enter any letters or symbols. It only lets my put in numbers. I even bought up the on screen keyboard and it does the same thing. Does anybody have any idea what's going on and how to fix it? This is the first time booting it up since changing the CMOS battery. Would that maybe have something to do with this?
