Letters not working on laptop

My daughter used my HP laptop 2 days ago. Appears password was changed to Microsoft password & she doesn't know how or what it is. Managed to reset the password, however password requires numbers & letters. When type numbers in you can see them entered, however letters don't register as if being entered. Tried onscreen keyboard with same result. Tried hooking to external keyboard with same result. Thinking must be a setting? I am limited as to what I can do as I can't get passed the enter password screen. Please help

If the administrator account is enabled on your PC, try logging with it to see if the problem still persists.

I can't log in at all as unable to enter letters contained within my password
Tried turning off power & unplugged power source & battery. Numbers & num lock work- just no letters.
Any other ideas?
