Question LG ultragear flickering/crashing laptop

I'm connecting this monitor via HDMI to my crusty laptop while waiting to finish my pc build.
But only when it is initially connected/on boot-up, the monitor flickers on and off with some glitching artifact and also sometimes causes my laptop to freeze.
The flickering can be solved by un-plugging and re-plugging the monitor power source but I have to do this every time I start up my laptop from sleep/shut down and my laptop still freezes every now and then.
Is this a monitor issue, power cable issue, or maybe it's my crusty laptop?

The crust is strong in that laptop. That monitor seems to only like being at it's native res of 1440p 144hz and that laptop can't provide that, I am pretty sure that is the issue.
