LGA 1151 and LGA 1150 interchangable?

It seems my Asus Ranger Maximus VII died last week. I don't remember the exact CPU and lost the documentation in a move. Finding a new Ranger 7 is proving difficult, would a Ranger 8 work with my existing CPU? The 7 looks like an LGA 1150 and the 8 is LGA 1151. I'm just about to put an offer in on a house in a week so I'm trying to keep my costs down as low as possible.

They are not interchangable, you can't use CPU's in different sockets and every socket contains different bios to work with different CPU's. LGA 1151 is an Intel microprocessor compatible socket which supports the Intel Skylake and the Kaby Lake CPU microarchitectures.

LGA 1151 is designed as a replacement for the LGA 1150 (known as Socket H3). LGA 1151 has 1151 protruding pins to make contact with the pads on the processor vs The LGA 1150 socket has 1150 protruding pins that make contact with the pads on the bottom side of the processor and the voltage regulator has again been moved from the CPU die to motherboard.

Nope, the cpu must match the socket.

Socket 1151 motherboard will not work with socket 1150 CPU.

The Maximus VII is LGA1150 (Z97)
The Maximus VIII is LGA1151 (Z170)

Those are not interchangeable

That's what I was afraid of, I didn't think so but doesn't hurt to check. If I was to get a new CPU too would my existing data drives work without needing to be formatted?

Data drives - yes, but you most likely will need to make Windows clean install (when switching to different model of motherboard).

So to not do a clean windows install I would need to find a Maximus Ranger 7? I see a few *used* Hero 7s but no rangers.

You can get any Z97 LGA1150 mainboard.
Doesn't have to be an Asus Maximus Ranger VII

Since Z97 is somewhat old stock I wouldn't pay so much for a board.
