Basically I am going to build a budget pc around the core 2 quad and i was looking at ram on ebay and i looked a 8gb ddr2 ram (4gb x 2) and it said it was only compatable with and cpu's. I was looking for answers and some people were saying that the socket lga 775 also took ddr3 ram. My question is that can the socket lga 775 support 8gb of ram and what type of ram (ddr2 or ddr3). Thnx

lga 775 can support 8gb of ram, but it depends on the motherboard. The motherboard will also determine if you need ddr2 or ddr3, they made boards that supported both of those (one or the other, not both at the same time). I was running two lga 775 boards with 4gb of ram each. This was a few years back and ddr3 was cheaper.

I ended up replacing one of the motherboards with an lga775 board that supported ddr3 and bought ddr3 to go with it (for less than the price of 8gb ddr2). Those were new prices though. The lga775 is the cpu socket and refers to what type of cpu it supports. Ram support is up to the motherboard but most were ddr2 boards.
