have anybody of you guys experienced the LGA 775 on an 865PE chipset, does it outperforms the normal prescotts, or they perform extremely the same?

Im one of the few here that has taken on the 775 CPU. There are some problems that need to be understood before getting one of the 775 series. Mainly heat. Yes, the 775 will outperform the 478, but again there are some things you need to understand. On the 865 or 875 platform there is no need IMO to buy a 775 over a 478. In fact if your going to use either of these chipsets then the Northwood core is the best choice.

The only platform that you are really going to see the 775 outperform the 478 is with the new 925x or better than that the XE chipset. There are only 2 boards that I know of at this time that can fully unlock the potential of the 775. Asus has the P5AD2 series the E-Premium"$230.00" is the one I have and the fastest on the open market at this time. There is also the ABIT Fatallity which cost close to the same. Both use DDR2 instead of the regualr DDR. This is another area that you must buy the best and fastest product to gain the advantage of a 775. You will need RAM that is capable of hitting DDR667 or better. Otherwise you will not see the performance difference and will only cause yourself alot of headaches. The last thing that I will mention is that you will need to purchase a Liquid cooling system for the heat that is put off by this CPU. This is a very expensive setup, but IMO is a good choice.

Keep in mind that your question was about the 775 outperforming the 478. All of the things that I have listed are a must for this CPU to outperform the 478. If you need more info let me know.

well thanx for ur response
so about the heat, does it get hotter than the prescott 478 !? coz the water cooling is not an option in the new system
neither the 925 chipset since the current VGA is AGP
so now the question is, if both processors r on a 865PE chipset, will they have the exact same performance, or what ?! thanks a lot :)

The 775 gets hotter. Much hotter. Actually if your cooling with air you will see the same if not even better performance on that platform with the 478, but if I were in your shoes I would think seriously about the Northwood core. It will OC as good if not better and it is much cooler. What MOBO do you have

northwood is not an option too since i cant find it in stock, MOBO still depends on the processor, whether P4P800 for 478 OR MSI Neo3 for LGA..both of 865PE chipset.
what about stepping EO, heard of it?

If you go with socket 775, I suggest you get a 14cm single fan power supply to help remove hot air away from the cpu. Another item that would help cooling is a case with the back or side duct that sits over the cpu, to draw in outside air. Dell uses these in some of their cases.

well flooding the case with fans is fine i think, but the thing is i need to know if the performance of LGA processors is better than the 478 or vice versa, and what if the 478 is plugged to a 875 chipset !

I dont think that the 775 is going to outperform the 478 on either of the platforms that you have mentioned. The 775 will outperform the 478, but it requires a different Chipset and DDR2.

I have 2 systems currently. One is a 3.0E socket 478 CPU on a 875 Mobo. I can run this rig at 3.6 stable on air with PC4000 RAM. I also have a 3.4 socket 775 on a 925XE Mobo and can run it at 3.8 - 4.0 but it requires liquid to cool it and DDR2 along with a PCIexpress Video card.

So I would say that based on your choices then no the 775 probably will not outperform the socket 478. This question doesnt really have a simple yes or no answer like you are asking for. There are a few variables that will play into how well each will perform. What Video card are you using and what RAM can you choose from. Both of these have an influence on the performance of the system.
