LGA775 Heatsink thermal paste

Hi, i wanted to ask about thermal paste removal.
I used some nail polish and cotton to remove the thermal paste, is that a good job? Also, do i really have to remove those edges because they seem stuck or burnt. Thanks.

Good job its very clean. I wouldnt worry too much about the edges it wont hurt anything but if u wanna be ocd just scrape it off with a small flathead screwdriver itll come off.

Nail polish is terrible. It leaves a shiny surface that does not at all help in thermal paste removal.

Previously there was excessive use of thermal paste.
Watch some youtube videos, how to apply thermal paste correctly.

Nail polish is terrible. It leaves a shiny surface that does not at all help in thermal paste removal.

I suspect he means nail polish remover, at least I really hope that's what he means.

Look at the picture he posted. Crusted thermal paste in the grooved ring of the copper plate and apparent dust bunnies on the arm of that heatsink. What kind of cleaning job is that?

All you need is a dollar bottle of rubbing alcohol and clean the extra paste off and then put no more then a tiny pea size drop of new thermal paste on. I for sure would remove the stuff that around the heatsink it could fall off into new paste and cause issues while mounting it again.

the layer you want to end up with is microscopically thin, old dried out stuff won't be.
