My old unit has been powered by cheap intex PSU’s - priced at $12- I generally buy a new one every three month of heavy use – My PC stays connected to the internet for weeks running downloading via IDM and RG. Now I am waiting for new expensive hardware a total new build – my inquiry is: How does a high-end new PSU affect my PC does it protect my hardware or does it live longer? In other words, how long does a Seasonic SS-1050XM ATX 1050W last on average, under heavy use? Or is it a must with high-end MB and CPU?

yes, it lives itself longer and it protects your hardware too. please post the components you're using for the pc. you probably don't need a 1000W psu, in most cases a 600-700W good quality unit is plenty.

yes, for high end cpu's/graphics cards you will need a powerful psu.

the highest end psu come with a 10 years warranty (some manufacturers are even comfortable giving a lifetime warranty).

It's not necessarily a must to have a high end PSU for a high end CPU and MOBO. It'll def. last longer than your Intex PSU's. Go with the highest efficiency you can for a PSU. You'll get more out of it that way. And it wont necessarily "protect" your hardware persay...

Yes it will theres a reason that those cheap psu's give you 1000watts for 30 dollars there made with the cheapest crap parts available and do not have the safe guards quality psu's do so if you want to risk destroying everything that is plugged into one of those cheap pieces of garbage and possibly setting your house on fire go for it.

i7-4790K - SABERTOOTH Z97 MARK 1 . I do not intend to do any gaming so I am not installing a graphics card . I have been told that the Intel® HD Graphics will be enough to play my 1080p videos. So do you think I need something with lower wattage than the Seasonic above? Do you think it is a waste? or does over-watting damage my hardware?

If you are running only onboard video, you can get a power supply with 1/3rd the wattage of a 1k unit. Get about a 500w one in-case you decide to put in a video card in the system, that will be enough for a good upper mid range card.

I would never go with a non trusted psu brand

Lol in bad cases u can kill your data/ even set your house on fire the psu is the heart of the pc never cheap on it

And u wont need 1kw psu unless you're running

R9 295x2 quadfire lol most cases 850w will do for sli + overclock
