So we suffered from a direct lightning strike in my new house a few days ago, It struck the satellite dish thats mounted on pole in the ground thats about 2 - 3 feet from my house and it melted the wires that went from the dish to the junction box on the side of the house, I don't use dish here, it was there when we bought the place but the wires are disconnected but go into the same box that our cable/internet wire goes into, so it also melted most of the wiring that goes to my modem/router, it didn't make it to the modem its self and I assumed grounded before that point.
Anyway, the cable tech came out and ran new wire and replaced my modem and I had to take care of other damages, TP-Link was awsome and is replacing my router, it took out my modem, my router, my dual Xeon server, a Lenovo m73 tiny with pihole, and took out my UPS and power conditioner, and killed the ethernet port in my garage PC. It didn't kill my desktop or its Ethernet port shockingly. It did kill 8 of our LED light fixtures and a TV in the other room which it had power problems anyway.
So my server took the brunt of the hit, it killed 2 6TB HDD's, the PSU, no idea on the RAM, its DDR3 ECC stuff, the motherboard and the 4 1TB sata SSD's in it, amazingly the USB3 card and the sata card still works lol.
My Lenovo I used for PieHole, the 500GB HDD is dead, the ram I can't test at the moment, its DDR3 laptop style, it has a i5 4570s in it that I can't test either, the power brick also shorts or pops every time you plug it into the PC so I don't want to mess with it.
Home Owner Insurance deemed it to not be enough for them to cover or some crap so Im on my own with that.
The question part:
Which one of these systems do ya'll think would be the best option for a basic TrueNAS server, doing nothing but file sharing until I find something better ?
A) AMD Phenom x3 B75, with a MSI 860GM-P43 but only 4 GB of DDR3 ram
B) Q6600, some HP board, 8GB of DDR2,
Both systems have a 1Gbit port, the AMD system has USB3 but it shouldn't matter much if at all, the Q6600 is DDR2 but it does have 4 Dimm slots 2 of them are used, has 2 free slots for more, the AMD only has 2 slots and I do not have any more DDR3 ram, I got a bunch of DDR4 I wish would work.
I'm only going to be using it for a while, I do plan to find a used Xeon based server in the future, something with at least 8 cores or more for virtual machines, I need one VM for hosting a server for a modded Minecraft for my sister and her friends, a Valhiem server and I did have a ARK server, so I'd like to have some horse power so it'll probably be a while until I find a server I want, I still need to buy more storage drives which I might do before I fork out for a server as I only have a bunch of 500GB 2.5 inch HDD's that work anyway.
Glad I have multiple backups!
