I need to be applying my mind to getting my .22/250 Tikka rebarrelled.
The signs are there that the old girl is no longer as bright as she
used to be - groups opening a bit, length of cartridge with bullet
touching lands has increased enough to be noticeable.
Rather like an old spaniel which has worked devotedly for many years,
I would rather not simply consign this old girl to the racks of the
dealer who'd sell me a bright shiny new rifle and so I'm thinking
about the rebarrel route, in this case, heavy barrel, threaded for
moderator, possibly fluted, possibly stainless.
Anyone here got recent experience of such remedial surgery and the
likely cost using a reputable riflesmith please?
Here's my provisional spec:
1. A return to 0.25" moa essential
2. Staying with 55gn VMax bullets
3. Heavy barrel, must be threaded for Reflex T8 moderator.
4. Chamber to be standard .22/250 ( not Ackley Imp, can't see the
benefit).
5. Not sure about fast twist?
6. Not sure about fluting? (I know there's a cost and a benefit)
7. Quite keen on stainless steel (For longevity. I discount the chance
of toby catching the glint of moonlight when the rifle is "muzzle on"
at a typical 150 yards).
