Limit bandwidth on Zyxel P8702N

Hello.

So I'm having some issues in fairly allocating bandwidth in my family. I don't have the *best* of internet speeds, but I'm not claiming it's the best out there.

The issue is that while I want to use the internet for gaming undisturbed, my sister constantly use streaming services like netflix/popcorntime etc. & snapchat/upload 2 facebook etc.

I've tried sorting this in our family, but she doesn't care and I can't really block her from the internet/limit her with parental control.

I've got full control of the router though.

I've tried setting up two different wireless channels, one which has a dl/ul limit, but this limits it in such a way the network is barely usable.

What if I set myself as DMZ Host and limit NAT Sessions to something low, would this limit their bandwidth? If it simply drops then when they overtax the router, that's not good enough.

I'm not trying to monopolize the internet, I just want to be able to use it undisturbed without having to play with a ping that's all over the place.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If you are on wireless get off of it. Wired connections have far less issues with ping swing than wireless does.

Setting yourself as the DMZ host just means the internet has free access to your PC if you don't have a firewall on it.

Depending on the router you get, you could get a more spendy one that would allow you to throttle just her connection by the mac address on her computer/device.

I can't connect to cable, my pc is way too far away from the router.

Would it work though, setting myself as DMZ and limiting NAT sessions (since DMZ is unaffected by rules)?

I know I can buy a new router of course, but if I can get it to work with the shitty stock one I got sent from my ISP, I'd prefer that over spending cash.

Why don't you just run your PC on the 5g wireless radio and force everyone else to use 2.4g

Still it may not matter if you bandwidth is very low. It is seldom the wireless that is the bottleneck.

If your router has QoS you might be able to limit the upload bandwidth. 23m should be enough download bandwidth to allow a couple of hd movies to be watched and still have plenty left for games. Now if someone is running torrent that will eat it all and there is not much you can do.

You have to determine some how if you are exceeding the upload or download bandwidth.

@ahnilated - No my pc isn't more than 100m from my router, but when the router is on the 1st floor and my pc is on the 2nd, what do you want me to do? Draw a cable through the entire house? Nah that's not going to happen....

@bill001g - How do I set my pc up to use the 5g channel? So far none of my devices have found that network even though it's been enabled since I got the router.

I don't know if the download limit is being hit, though I really doubt it.
Sometimes there is only minor interference, but this is just as annoying when you play FPS games like CS: GO where a stable ping is more important than having a higher one (I'd prefer stable 80ms over 18-200ms).

Even at 2.5mb/s download the ping isn't as bad as when my sister uses netflix.

However since my upload speed is really slow, it's even more of a problem when she's using snapchat (which is all the time), it results in my internet completely dropping until the picture is done uploading, and she's sending one picture to a bunch of people, all the time.
This doesn't show too well with the "ping" command though. It drops, ms still fine but skype and gaming are all dead, then there is no reply, then it raises to 2-3kms, before it goes back down to 20ms.

Right now, I'm doing nothing except write this and my ping is like this and it's unbearable to play as this.

I doubt it's download being used 100%, because if I max my download in utorrent my ping goes to 800-1kms (which is understandable).

So what's causing the unreliable ms, I don't know. - Oh and I had the same problem a few months ago when I was connected with cable...
