Question Limiting CPU cores for an old game - am I harming my CPU in the long run?

Trying to play Dawn of War 2 which flat out refuses to run on 16 core CPUs. After a little bit of googling, the only solution was to download a community made fix which "limits the number of cores seen by Dawn of War 2". I'm a bit hesitant to download the fix because I'm not a PC person at all and I don't know if there are any long term repercussions if I play the game for long periods when core count is limited (like CPU degradation). Is it safe to do so?

Thanks.

Multi core CPUs run lots of applications and games on a single core. Many games cannot take advantage of multiple cores or opt not to do that for compatibility.

I'm not familiar with the DoW2 patch but if all it does is trick the game into seeing fever cores, then how could it harm the CPU? It's safer than disableing cores yourself.

Anyway, it's been out for a couple of years and i tried searching for posts about problems. Doesn't look like it's caused any CPUs to die. :)

I am not worried about the patch itself, but the act of limiting CPU cores for a specific game. My i9 13900k was faulty and had to be replaced, so I am a little extra paranoid about this stuff. Thanks for the reply!

It shouldn't cause any issues on a properly set up system.
You can monitor your core clocks, temps, and power draw while in game, look up a guide on how to setup msi afterburner, it works on any mobo/cpu.
The only thing that could cause an issue would be if the CPU is being auto overclocked by the mobo pushing the few cores that would run the game too far making them hot.

I don't mess around with any motherboard/overclock settings. Dawn of War 2 is an old game so I don't think it's going to stress the CPU hard enough to make it run hot for an extended period of time.

This has been one of my favorite franchises. The most annoying issue that I have had with it on modern machines is that with the higher resolution the cursor just "goes away" in the background. I tried various ways to make it more visible/different cursor type but never could get it to display correctly after the map starts getting built up and particularly in battle.

I still keep Soulstorm loaded up but it has been some time since I even attempted to play.
