We just upgraded our cable internet and have consistent speeds of 55Mbps over wired connection. Our wireless signal is much slower, typically 18-20Mbps. I have searched for known issues with the router but have not found any help. The router is a Linksys E2500. I have both the 2.4 and 5Ghz over N-only networks. I was running Mixed but read that using just one may help. I haven't noticed a change. I reset the router and nothing has changed.

Modem is a Surfboard SB6121.

It's not a computer hardware issue--My laptop tested about 50kbps at work.

I know wireless speeds will be slower than wired but we had similar wireless speeds at the cheaper ISP package (25Mbps). The primary use of the wireless is streaming services. Our cable hookup is in the office on the opposite side of the house from our living room.

Is it just time to pay for a nicer router?

**Speeds were taken with speednet

Thanks

I am doing set up sitting right next to the router (less than a foot). Regularly there are 2 laptops (each testing 20Mbps when on at the same time) but while tweaking settings, it is just my laptop.

There was an update available but there was no change after the install.

Also, A friend is bringing his router over tonight. He consistently gets 40-45 Mbps over wireless at his place, with the same ISP package. I will update with results of that test

ALWAYS test your speed using YOUR IPS's speed test site........Otherwise it's a waste of time, there are too many variables that will interfere with a remotely close evaluation.

As to 55Kbps........that's dial up speed...and if you are using phone lines for connectivity the older they are the slower they are. If your buddy is in a new neighborhood or even the other side of the street, the phone lines could be newer or connected to different device.

You are correct, I meant Mb/s ( I have edited to reflect). If this is all the speed I can get, I may just pop back down--I was getting wireless speeds this fast with the cheaper package. I will post later with results with the new router

Maybe I didn't understand fully either.

If you get 55Mbs on wired, then your Motorola Modem is not the issue. The E2500 should be able to push 55Mbs real world rates.

Make sure you have your router channel on a 20Mhz band, not 40Mhz. Other then that, it sounds like some incompatibility between the router and your laptops WiFi adapter.

My e3000 puses 38Mb/s on Speedtest.net, which is my ISP speed. I think most real world wireless speeds I've had max out around 230Mb/s, but if I get 150Mb/s I am happy, as it's not always easy to get higher then that.

Either way, there must be something off..

Just finished testing my friends router. It's an Asus RT-N66U so I know it will be hard to compare to my budget router. Speeds were 55 Mb/s everywhere in my house. I did not change any settings, just plug in and reset the modem.

I swapped mine back in and it was back down to 20Mb/s, even dropping to around 15. I am going to reset my router again. I'm stumped. I'll post a screenshot of my settings to see if anything pops out.

Did a factory reset and am still locked to 20.
Here are my settings:

No good new yet. I tried installing dd-wrt to see if it was something in the stock firmware. The install went smoothly but there was no performance improvement. I reverted back to stock because dd-wrt doe snot support 5GHz yet.

Update: I lowered the MTU from 1500 to 1400 and disabled the VMM support. I read about this in another forum. This bumped the speed on my girlfriend's macbook air (up to 55ish Mbps). Unfortunately, my laptop (windows 7) is still only clocking 20-22 Mbps.

Still only getting 20-22 on the windows laptop.

I am now having an issue with the Ethernet ports on the router. I was using a long (50ft) cable to run from the router to my desktop. Now, my desktop does not detect the cable by itself. I have to run a short cable from the router to a powered switch and then the long cable from the switch to the desktop. Is this a power issue? Any ideas?

You should be able to get at least 300+ feet with no problem. Regarding your 50' run, make sure the wire isn't running by anything creating EMI. Also if you coil up wire it will induce EMI even worse, in other words don't coil up wire around anything electrical... you would be surprised what I've seen people do...

I'm having the same exact problem. I've contacted my ISP, as well as Linksys, both to no avail. I've also tried updating the firmware, changing the channel, and varying between the 20mhz and 40mhz, neither have made any improvements. I am also sitting right next to my router/modem, with no other devices connected. Help!!!

I think WMM in Qos setting migh be the case. You have to disable it to get full download speed because wmm set priority for audio video data than http make you can call skype download file with no problem. I have problem when config this router it really slow to load config page. Are you have same problems?
