I have a Linksys 4 port router (BEFSR41 V.2). What I am trying to do is to host a game (Age of Empires 2). I have a friend who was able to do it using the same router, but I am not having as much luck. Things I have tried so far:

1. Disable router DHCP.
2. Assign the appropriate ports to forward (this was given to me by the same friend ).
3. Modify the TCP/IP network properties:
- Assign IP address (i.e. 192.168.1.100)
- Assign subnet mask (255.255.255.0)
- Add gateway (192.168.1.1)

What happens after I reboot is that I can sign in to AIM/ICQ so I know I'm online, but IE can't ever find webpages, so I cannot surf. Also when I start the game and try to host the multiplayer, there is a button I click on that will show the IP address I am supposed to give so that others can join, however it always shows the IP that I assigned for the PC (192.168.1.100)

Any suggestions?

well, the computer not being able to go on the internet sounds like somthing wrong with your computer. the number you give people to connect to your computer is the wan ip that the router gives you on the status page. if you still have problems you can put the server ip in the dmz host section. if you still have problems its likely somthing up with your computer.

i went to the tomshardware forums and all i got was this lousy signature.
