Linksys Wireless G Game Adapter issue

Guys,

I own a Linksys Wireless G Router and a Linksys Wireless G Game
Adapter to use with my XBOX (modified so that I can run XBOX Media
Center).

Everything is up and running and works great. I can FTP to the XBOX
and transfer files in and out, Internet apps work great on the XBOX
side too.

However, the one thing I cannot get working is that I cannot directly
connect to the Adapter with a browser from the PC upstairs. I don't
get it. Everything down there is setup as default so it's at
192.168.1.250. The SSID's match. But if I go to that IP I get Page Not
Found after a long delay.

On the PC side I'm setup static with my PC at a static IP and the
default gateway set to 192.168.1.1.

Anyone have any idea why I cannot bring up the setup screen for the
adapter from the PC??? No trouble doing it when I connect it directly
to the router. I can't ping it either.

FWIW, the Linksys game adapters are suspect. The only way I can configure
the -b version of the adapter is to directly connect through the ethernet
port to a computer. When setting up my son's system with the WRT54G, it was
also impossible to configure it through wireless or the Linksys router. It
was so frustrating that we exchanged for complete Microsoft adapters and
router, and had no problem with anything - setup took only minutes. Linksys
needs to do some work with these adapters (as well as some of their other
consumer equipment.)

Just a guess, and that is that the web config only works from the ethernet
interface. Any attempt to connect to it from the other direction,
wireless, would be disabled, because it would be considered less secure.

There may be a way to change this however. For example, I have their
BEFSR41 cable/dsl router. By default, it only lets you get to the web
config if you are connected to a LAN port. You can't do it if you are
coming in over the WAN port. But there are options in the config to enable
remote config with a password. There may be a similar setting for your
wireless game adapter.

I'm considering buying the Wireless G game adapter myself, because it
should work to connect any PC that already has an ethernet card. This
would save me trouble installing various PCI cards in old PCs or other
devices. Most everything already has an ethernet port in it these days.
The other option is USB, but things like the Xbox or old PCs don't have USB
or don't network via USB too well.

Is the performance decent so far? I'm curious if there is any real
performance differrence using an 11g game adapter vs 11g pci card.

Not according to their documention and support rep. The manual
specifically has a section outlining accessing it wirelessly from a
browser and what differences to expect over accessing it via Ethernet.

I have one other issue that's annoying me. I've been transfering a lot
of larger song files to my XBOX and every so often the connection
breaks down and I have to power cycle the access point to get it going
again.

I used it that way myself before hooking it to the XBOX.

Performance seems to be fine. Transfers are about 1,300KBps which is
about all you're going to get out of Wireless G.

Something is wrong with your router setup. I have or had three of BEFSR41
v2-v3 and have never had any problem accessing the router GUI from wireless.

On both the router and the access point I've just had it lock up while
sending changes to it. Support recommended changing the SSID from the
default setting. They seem to think it's connecting to someone else's
network. Yeah, okay. None of my neighbors are the wireless type.

I've had it a bit too long to return it. But I may complain to Linksys
and move to their full wireless access point device. I see less
complaints about it.

That's correct, and it plays movies fine when I stream them from my
PC.

Thanks. I may begin down that path myself. I'm very frustrated by the
instability of them.
