hello, I have a compaq presario 12xl500. I have a 6gig hd, of which I planned on using 1.2 gigs for linux. Any recommendations on which distro to use? I plan on doing some development, a little word processing, using some of the math packages, and some websurfing on it. So really I just need a small distro w/ good laptop support on it. Any ideas?

Errrmmm...I'd take either SuSE or Slackware if I was taking a distro. SuSE is nice and user-friendly, Slackware is for people who really know what they're doing.

I myself have a Presario 1700T and run my own customized distro on it.

One thing you'll need to be aware of...Compaq systems carry the Phoenix BIOS, which by all accounts does not provide Linux-compatible APM. However, there is a usable ACPI interface which can serve the same purpose.
