Hey everyone ! I am trying to decide to learn some coding/terminal stuff on my own on the side as a small hobby, but was wondering which one would be better in your opinions, if there is a better of course, Linux or OS X ?? Any opinions are appreciated :)

Solution

Huh. I've actually never seen that before. I didn't realize that Mac OS had actually gotten the legal right to call itself Unix and not Unix-Like. Well, got no choice but to concede on that. I still maintain that FreeBSD would be easier and cheaper than using MacOS though .
Linux is free, and is overall a better, more secure os than OS X. Unless you want to hackintosh, prepare to shell out completely wasted money on a macbook, which are ridiculously overpriced when you consider the hardware you're paying for. I used a Macbook Pro for 5 years as my primary computer, and I wish I'd spent the money on a cheaper laptop with a form of linux or BSD.

Just want to learn a terminal for my own personal use and hobby like I said and if it opens any doors later on, all the better :)

Either would do just fine as the terminal commands are almost identical. OS X is real Unix; Linux is a Unix lookalike. Both have a huge number of programming languages available.

If you already have a Mac then go with OS X; if not, Linux.

Wrong. OS X's Darwin(read: unix-like) substructure came somewhat from NetBSD, which split from 386BSD along with FreeBSD in 1993. 386BSD itself is an open-source descendant of AT&T's Research Unix from 1976, literally the Berkely Software Distribution. While not legally Unix, the BSDs are the closest thing to it that we have today aside from Unix V itself, and FreeBSD is widely considered the closest descendant of the BSDs.
