Linux software free?

Why would you pay for Linux?

Unless you are using it to provide enterprise or business class services then don't hand out money. You can donate to your favorite distributions if you are feeling generous and have the cash.

I understand. That would be nice to be able to survey what is in-fact being offered out there.

But typically if you are looking for the "Paid" versions than it is typically next to the free download link or page. But that would be insanely tedious to check each version individually.

I don't believe Ubuntu has a paid version. But you can donate.

They have an end-user version, Ubuntu Desktop.

Alternatively there is a LTS (Long Term Support) version which is meant to be used as servers or domain controllers where compatibility and reliability is crucial.

I'm personally not surprised that you ended up with Ubuntu. Most people do at first :)

No as such. Usually a "paid" Linux distro is really a free Linux distro with commercial support. Of course there's nothing stopping you from selling copies of Ubuntu if you wanted to. Nobody would buy them though 😉

Hehe if I had no soul or conscious that would be my profession. Selling Ubuntu on CDs slightly cheaper than any Windows version

And Ubuntu is the # 1 preferred linux distro to check out.

I have had IT professionals give me Ubuntu books to learn with when I was in High School. My Linux classes in college heavily used Ubuntu and CentOS (Both are from the same realm and generally use the same sets of commands). Now that I have a job working in IT, the company I work with uses Ubuntu for their end-users as well as a server to provide services on the network.

Randomizer hit the nail on the head. You are essentially paying for support, which can saves headaches and your job depending on your needs. But if you are using it at home then don't pay. Google is free. As well as Tomshardware.com :)

Ubuntu has customizable ad dons that cost extra

I don't think they sell any desktop-oriented software for Ubuntu, although they do have paid subscriptions for Ubuntu One (the business model for UO mimics that of Dropbox). There is some server/SaaS software which is commercial and closed-source, but that's probably not of interest to you.
