Linux too slow in Athlon XP

I have bought a new computer and I have in the hard disk the RedHat 7.3. When KDE starts my computer stays too slow and the hard disk doesn't work, but the applications open after about 30 seconds. I think the system stays waiting some task.

Who can help me?

I hear Mandrake has some code optimizations, but I've never ran Red Hat.

Soundz like it's connecting to something that it detected at install. Could be some jumpers on you hard disk too.
