I have been away from UO for some time. I see all kinds of new items on
vendors and I have no idea what they do. I try to check stratics but cannot
find any information. Is there a place that describes what these things are
for? Some of the items are the multi-colored skulls, ancient writing
scrolls, a gold scroll with a name I forgot, the purple leaves and probably
much more that I cannot remember right now.

ROFL! The scroll of Abaraxus. I have one of those! It's part of
the new Necromancer quest. Creat an new character and choose the
Necro template. You will be shot out of the birth canal into a most
horrible place, Umbra. You'll be in the home of an ancient
Necromancer and you'll get a quest to start the game. The quest it to
(in a round about way) get the Scroll of Abaraxus and deposite it
someplace. After statign a second Necro once I just stopped half way
through and kept the scroll figuring it to be a semi-rare one day. I
also have a Horn of Retreat that is given to Paladins on their little
quest.

Colored skulls are used to summon champions, so look up champion spawns
for info on them. Golden skulls are given to the ferryman to cross the
river in Doom to reach the Gauntlet (otherwise known as the place to run
around madly before dying.) Never seen an ancient writing scroll. Gold
scrolls were created by bugs right after the 3rd age I think. They're
just collector's items like furs or "a scrolls". Purple leaves are
probably those coming from the 7th Age reward "the Rose of Trinsic". They
give a +5 strength bonus for a while.

Thanks for the reply. The gold scroll is not the "Gold Scroll" from the
bug. It is a scroll with a name. Somthing with an A I believe. People are
selling them for like 17k I think. The writing scroll is a dull gray scroll
that says something like "A scroll with ancient writing". Saw 2-3 of those
around.

I believe that may be a server birth rare. It seems like I have
seen one of those in the house in the hedge maze. I still don't
understand the concept behind "server birth rare" and how people
manage the take one of whatever they are.

I think that might be the scroll you get with the Necromancy tutorial.
Scroll of Abraxas or something like that. One is black, and the other gold.
You have to use the scroll to complete the mission, but if you quit the
necromancer mission, you still have the scroll. 🙂 I forget the details,
because I did it so long ago.

I don't know how to break it to you, ROFL, but to complete the
quest you have to bring the scroll to someone in or around Umbra and
give it to them LOL, unless you had a "gleetch".

Been a long while since I did the quest, but I thought you had to use that
scroll at the well in Umbra to summon some daemon. But just as you do it, a
paladin appears and kills you. So the second time I did the quest, I just
didn't summon the daemon at the well, and I think that is how I kept the
scroll.

That's it! You drop it into the abyss. I managed to kill the
paladin with a maximal amount of effort.

What are the rewards for doing the Paladin and Necromancer quests?

IIRC you get an Undead slayer for both, and some regs...?

Meh. I guess that's why I never bothered. I have about 50 undead slayers
that I rarely use already. Mostly these days I hunt demons. I guess I
should go undead hunting with my new paladin though.

C'mon, I didn't even remember what you did with the scroll until
someone said it, and the last time I did the quest I didn't finish, I
kept the scroll.

Must have been a "gleetch" then, because my quest was shown complected
and when I finished I still had the scroll. The Paladin did not kill me, I
killed him. Maybe that did it.

No, the black/grey scroll gets used at the well, but you get to keep the
golden one. There must be hundreds of those things lying around the game,
and you can get a new one anytime simply by creating a new necromancer and
doing the quest. I'd hardly call it rare. Unwanted, maybe, certainly not
well done, but not rare either.

Liches are not too much of a challenge with EOO and other pally spells up. A
Lord goes down pretty quick now. If you're interested in gold, the best
loot-to-kill ratio is the humble mummy I reckon. It didn't get nerfed when
the lich did, and even comes with free bandies. For an extra thrill you can
hunt them in that brazier room in Deceit which spawns the random monster.
Several times I used to go in there to find ghosts milling around and a
Dragon staring at me. Took me a while to realise they were not pets gone
wild.
